Jan Rauchwarger was born in Turkmenistan, USSR, in 1942.
Rauchwarger, is an Israeli master artist (engaged in painting, print making and sculpture) and an art teacher.
Rauchwerger's work is fundamentally realistic with the emphasis being on the process: observing the object of the painting and the light, and focusing on the process of making the painting. In his words (in an interview with Carmela Teichman): "My connection with life is visual. For the purpose of observation, I need a model in front of me, a landscape, nature, a still life - something to observe".
Rauchwerger presented his works in many solo and group exhibitions. Among other things, in 2004 a retrospective exhibition was held in his honor at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem. In 2008, following his winning the Rapoport Prize, he exhibited at the Tel Aviv Museum and in 2020 he exhibited at the Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art.
Jan Rauchwerger was respected by his colleagues and the artistic establishment: he received the Israel Discount Bank Award for Israeli Artist, the Israel Museum, Jerusalem (1984), the Dizengoff Award for Painting (1997) as well as the Rapaport Award for Israeli Artist (2007) and more.
